Valenciennes

Valenciennes is a city in the Nord department of northern France, on the Scheldt near the Belgian border. In the Middle Ages it was one of the two chief towns of the County of Hainaut and a centre of cloth and lace making. Louis XIV captured it in 1677, and the Treaty of Nijmegen made it French in 1678. The painter Antoine Watteau was born there.
