Scheldt
The Scheldt is a river of western Europe, flowing about 350 km from northern France through Belgium to the North Sea in the Netherlands. Its estuary gives access to the port of Antwerp, and for centuries its valley was a frontier and trade route between Gaul, Flanders and the Low Countries. The Dutch Republic's closure of its mouth after 1585 crippled Antwerp's trade for two centuries.
