Max von Oppenheim

1860–1946 · 20th century

Max von Oppenheim was a German diplomat, orientalist and archaeologist. In 1899 he discovered the site of Tell Halaf in north-eastern Syria, ancient Guzana, which he excavated from 1911 to 1913 and in 1929. He displayed the finds in his own museum in Berlin, where they were shattered by bombing in 1943; the fragments were reassembled and exhibited again in 2011.
