Mayor of the palace

Also known as palace mayors, major domos

The mayor of the palace was the chief official of the Merovingian Frankish kingdom. Over time the mayors became the real rulers while the Merovingian kings were reduced to figureheads. Pepin the Short, mayor of the palace, deposed the last Merovingian king in 751, founding the Carolingian dynasty.
