Meiningen Ensemble
The Meiningen Ensemble was the theatre company of the court of Saxe-Meiningen, directed by Duke George II with Ludwig Chronegk and Ellen Franz. Between 1874 and 1890 it toured across Europe, staging plays with historically accurate sets and costumes, carefully drilled crowd scenes and ensemble acting without star performers. Its methods strongly influenced modern directing, including André Antoine and Konstantin Stanislavski.
