Merfyn Frych
Merfyn Frych ('the Freckled') was king of Gwynedd from 825 until his death in 844. He came to power after the death of Hywel ap Rhodri Molwynog, and Welsh tradition links his origins with the Isle of Man. He founded the dynasty that ruled Gwynedd for the rest of the Middle Ages, and his son Rhodri the Great extended its power over much of Wales.
