Messali Hadj
Messali Hadj (1898–1974) was a founder of Algerian nationalism who led the North African Star, then the Algerian People's Party and the Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties. He was the first major figure to demand full independence for Algeria. When younger activists founded the FLN in 1954, he set up the rival Algerian National Movement, and the two waged a bloody struggle during the war.
