Michael I of Romania

1921–2017 · 20th century

Michael I of Romania was the last king of Romania, reigning as a child from 1927 to 1930 and again from 1940 to 1947. In August 1944 he led the coup that removed the dictator Ion Antonescu and took Romania over to the Allies. Under Soviet pressure the communists forced him to abdicate on 30 December 1947, and he lived in exile until after 1989.
