Mogho Naaba Wobgo

c. 1850–1904 · 19th century · Also known as Boukary Koutou

Mogho Naaba Wobgo, born Boukary Koutou, was king of the Mossi kingdom of Ouagadougou from about 1890. He resisted French expansion, and when French forces took Ouagadougou in 1896 he fled and continued resistance from exile in the Gold Coast, where he died in 1904. The French installed his brother in his place, and Wobgo is remembered as a symbol of resistance in Burkina Faso.
