Mouride brotherhood

1883 · 19th century · Also known as Muridiyya, Mourides, Mouridiyya

The Mouride brotherhood is a Sufi order founded in Senegal in 1883 by Amadou Bamba, with its holy city at Touba. Its disciples owe obedience and labour to their marabouts, and from the late 19th century they spread groundnut cultivation across the Senegalese interior, becoming central to the colonial economy. It remains one of the most powerful religious and economic organisations in Senegal.
