Moynaq

Also known as Muynak

Moynaq is a town in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, that was once a fishing port on the southern shore of the Aral Sea. As Soviet irrigation from the Amu Darya shrank the sea from the 1960s, the shoreline retreated far away, destroying its fishing and canning industry. Rusting ships stranded on the former seabed have made it a symbol of the Aral Sea disaster.
