Nukus

Nukus is the capital of the Republic of Karakalpakstan in north-western Uzbekistan, on the Amu Darya. A small settlement until the Soviet period, it replaced Turtkul as capital in 1939 and grew into an industrial city. It is known for the Savitsky Museum of Soviet avant-garde art, and in 2022 it saw deadly protests against plans to end Karakalpakstan's right to secede.
