Mrauk U

Also known as Mrohaung

Mrauk U is a town in Rakhine State, western Myanmar, that was the capital of the Arakanese kingdom from 1430 to 1785. Founded by Min Saw Mon after he regained his throne with help from the Bengal Sultanate, it grew rich on trade across the Bay of Bengal and was visited by Portuguese, Dutch and other merchants. Its many stone temples and pagodas survive as an archaeological site.
