Mughan plain
The Mughan plain is a lowland steppe south of the Aras river, divided today between Azerbaijan and Iran. It was a traditional pasture and gathering place for armies and tribes. In 1736 it was the site of the assembly at which Nader Shah was proclaimed ruler, ending the Safavid Empire and founding the Afsharid Empire.
