Muhammad ibn Wasif
Muhammad ibn Wasif was a secretary at the court of the Saffarid ruler Ya'qub ibn al-Layth in Sistan in the late 9th century. According to the Tarikh-i Sistan, when Ya'qub complained that he could not understand poems praising him in Arabic, Muhammad composed verses in Persian instead. He is therefore remembered as one of the first poets of New Persian literature.
