Muluki Ain
The Muluki Ain is the national legal code of Nepal issued in 1854 under the Rana prime minister Jang Bahadur Rana. It codified civil and criminal law and placed every group in the kingdom within a single caste hierarchy, from the 'sacred-thread-wearing' high castes through the 'liquor-drinking' castes down to the untouchables, with punishments varying by caste. It remained in force, much amended, until a new code replaced it in 1963.
