Kot massacre

1846 · 19th century

The Kot massacre took place on the night of 14–15 September 1846 in the Kot, the palace armoury courtyard in Kathmandu. After the murder of a favourite of Queen Rajya Lakshmi, Jang Bahadur Kunwar and his brothers killed dozens of leading nobles and officials, including the prime minister. The massacre brought Jang Bahadur to power and began the rule of the hereditary Rana prime ministers, which lasted until 1951.
