Bhimsen Thapa

1775–1839 · 19th century

Bhimsen Thapa (1775–1839) was the chief minister (mukhtiyar) of Nepal from 1806 to 1837. He dominated the court during the minority of the kings, built up the army and continued the kingdom's westward expansion, which led to the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814–1816 and the loss of territory under the Treaty of Sugauli. Overthrown by court rivals in 1837, he died in prison in 1839.
