Nepali Congress

1950– · 20th century

The Nepali Congress is a social democratic political party in Nepal, formed in 1950 from earlier anti-Rana movements. With King Tribhuvan and Indian backing it helped end the rule of the Rana prime ministers in 1951, and its leader B. P. Koirala became the first elected prime minister in 1959. Banned under the Panchayat system from 1960, it led the 1990 People's Movement and has headed many governments since.
