Nepherites I

d. 393 BCE · 5th century BCE · Also known as Nefaarud I

Nepherites I was the founder of the Twenty-ninth Dynasty of Egypt, ruling from about 399 to 393 BCE. A general from Mendes in the Delta, he overthrew Amyrtaeus of the Twenty-eighth Dynasty, who was probably executed. He kept Egypt independent of Persia, sent grain and ships' equipment to Sparta during its war with Persia, and was buried at Mendes, where remains of his tomb have been excavated.
