Twenty-eighth Dynasty of Egypt
Origins
Amyrtaeus, a prince of Sais and probably a grandson of an earlier rebel of the same name, led a revolt against Achaemenid Egypt when Darius II died in 404 BCE. By about 400 BCE even the Jewish garrison at Elephantine dated its documents by his reign.
Rule and society
Very little is known of his rule. He controlled the Delta and gradually the whole country, and Persia, distracted by the revolt of Cyrus the Younger, did not try to recover Egypt.
Decline and legacy
Around 399 to 398 BCE Amyrtaeus was overthrown by Nepherites I of Mendes, founder of the Twenty-ninth Dynasty of Egypt; an Aramaic papyrus suggests he was executed.
