Evagoras I
Evagoras I was king of Salamis in Cyprus from 411 to 374 BCE. He promoted Greek culture, extended his rule over much of the island and allied with Athens and with Egypt against the Achaemenid Empire. After a war of about ten years he was besieged in Salamis, but in 380 BCE he obtained a peace that left him king as a Persian tributary. He was murdered in 374 BCE, and Isocrates wrote an encomium in his praise.
