Murshid Quli Khan

c. 1660–1727 · 18th century

Murshid Quli Khan was a Mughal official appointed diwan (revenue minister) of Bengal by Aurangzeb. He moved the revenue office to the town he renamed Murshidabad and in 1717 also became governor. His efficient revenue system made Bengal the richest Mughal province, and his rule laid the foundations of the hereditary Nawabs of Bengal, who acted largely independently of Delhi.
