Nabonassar

r. 747–734 BCE · 8th century BCE · Also known as Nabu-nasir

Nabonassar, in Akkadian Nabu-nasir, was king of Babylon from 747 to 734 BCE. His reign marks the start of the Babylonian Chronicles and of regular astronomical records, and Ptolemy's list of kings, used by later astronomers, counted its years from his accession, the Era of Nabonassar. He ruled under the shadow of Assyria's Tiglath-Pileser III, who campaigned in Babylonia in 745 BCE.
