Nagorno-Karabakh
Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous region in the south-east of the Lesser Caucasus, within Azerbaijan, historically with an Armenian majority. Made an autonomous oblast of Soviet Azerbaijan in 1923, it became the focus of the Karabakh movement and of a war in which Armenian forces took control by 1994. Azerbaijan regained much of the surrounding area in 2020 and the rest in September 2023, after which almost all its Armenians fled.
