Karabakh movement

1988–1991 · 20th century

The Karabakh movement was a mass Armenian movement from 1988 to 1991 demanding the transfer of Nagorno-Karabakh from Soviet Azerbaijan to Soviet Armenia. Huge demonstrations in Yerevan, led by the Karabakh Committee, turned it into a broader campaign for democracy and independence, and its leaders, including Levon Ter-Petrosyan, came to power in Armenia in 1990.
