Nair

The Nair are a Hindu community of Kerala, India, who formed the warrior and landholding class of the region's kingdoms, serving as soldiers, administrators and local chiefs. They were known for their martial training in kalaripayattu and for matrilineal inheritance, in which property and family descended through women. Their traditional role declined under British rule, and matrilineal inheritance was abolished by law in the 20th century.
