Navajo Code Talkers

1942–1945 · 20th century

The Navajo Code Talkers were Navajo men recruited by the US Marine Corps in the Second World War to send radio messages in a code based on the Navajo language. Some 400 served in the Pacific, including at Iwo Jima, and the Japanese never broke the code. Their work remained classified until 1968, and they later received Congressional Gold and Silver Medals.
