Kit Carson

1809–1868 · 19th century

Kit Carson was an American frontiersman, trapper and guide who became famous through John C. Frémont's western expeditions of the 1840s. As a Union army officer during the Civil War, he led the scorched-earth campaign of 1863–1864 against the Navajo that ended in their forced removal on the Long Walk to Bosque Redondo. He is remembered both as a frontier hero and for his part in that campaign.
