New Christians
New Christians was the term used in Spain and Portugal for Jews and Muslims who had converted to Christianity, and their descendants. In Portugal they were the main target of the Inquisition, established in 1536, which suspected the sincerity of their conversion. Their persecution affected commerce and intellectual life in the Portuguese Empire.
