Nicola Pisano

c. 1220–c. 1284 · 13th century

Nicola Pisano was an Italian sculptor who worked in Pisa and is often seen as a founder of modern sculpture. His pulpits for the Pisa Baptistery, finished in 1260, and Siena Cathedral drew on Roman sarcophagi to give figures new weight and realism. With his son Giovanni he carved the Fontana Maggiore in Perugia.
