Fontana Maggiore

1278 · 13th century

The Fontana Maggiore is a medieval fountain in the main square of Perugia, completed in 1278 to mark the arrival of an aqueduct bringing water to the hilltop city. Its two polygonal marble basins are carved with reliefs of the months, the liberal arts, biblical scenes and local figures by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. It is a symbol of Perugia's communal pride.
