Nyiginya dynasty
The Nyiginya dynasty was the royal line of the Kingdom of Rwanda, whose kings bore the title mwami. Court traditions recorded by Alexis Kagame trace it back many centuries, though historians date its rise near Lake Muhazi to the 16th or 17th century. It expanded by conquering neighbours such as Bugesera, Gisaka and Ndorwa, reached its height under Kigeli IV Rwabugiri, and lost power when the monarchy was abolished in 1961.
