Oñati

Also known as Oñate

Oñati is a town in Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country of Spain. It was a separate lordship and county until 1845, and in 1540 Bishop Rodrigo Mercado de Zuazola founded there the University of the Holy Spirit, for centuries the only university in the Basque Country. The Carlists reopened it during the Third Carlist War.
