Osman Pazvantoğlu

1758–1807 · 18th century

Osman Pazvantoğlu was an Ottoman janissary from Vidin who seized control of the town around 1794 and ruled it as a rebel pasha. Opposing Sultan Selim III's military reforms, he defeated government armies sent against him, backed the dahije janissaries in Belgrade and sent raiders across Bulgaria and Wallachia. The sultan had to recognise him as pasha of Vidin, and he held power until his death in 1807.
