Osman I

Osman I was the founder of the Ottoman dynasty, a Turkoman chieftain of the Kayı clan of the Oghuz Turks, active around 1300. His beylik in Bithynia lay on the frontier with Byzantium and attracted ghazi warriors. His victory over a Byzantine force at Bapheus in 1301 established the military credibility on which the Ottoman Empire was built.
