Battle of Köse Dağ

1243 · 13th century · Part of the Mongol invasions of Anatolia

The Battle of Köse Dağ was fought in 1243 in north-eastern Anatolia between the Mongols and the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. The Mongols won decisively, reducing the Seljuks of Rum to vassals. The resulting fragmentation of Anatolia into small principalities created the conditions from which the Ottoman Empire emerged.
