Ostend Company

1722–1731 · 18th century

The Ostend Company was a trading company chartered by Emperor Charles VI in 1722 to trade from the Austrian Netherlands with the East Indies and China. Operating from Ostend, it made large profits in the tea trade and set up posts in India. Under pressure from Britain and the Dutch Republic, Charles VI suspended its charter in 1727 and abolished it by the Second Treaty of Vienna in 1731.
