Otto the Rich

1125–1190 · 12th century · Also known as Otto II, Margrave of Meissen

Otto the Rich was margrave of Meissen from 1156 to 1190, a member of the House of Wettin. The discovery of silver near Freiberg around 1168 made him wealthy, and he used the income to fortify his lands, found towns and endow the Cistercian monastery of Altzella. Silver mining around Freiberg remained a mainstay of Saxon wealth for centuries.
