Ōuchi Yoshitaka

1507–1551 · 16th century

Ōuchi Yoshitaka was head of the Ōuchi clan, lords of Suō and Nagato in western Japan, whose capital Yamaguchi was a centre of courtly culture and of trade with Ming China. He received the Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier in 1551 and allowed him to preach. Later that year his retainer Sue Harukata rebelled, and Yoshitaka was forced to kill himself, bringing about the clan's fall.
