P. V. Narasimha Rao

1921–2004 · 20th century · Also known as Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao

P. V. Narasimha Rao was an Indian National Congress politician who served as prime minister of India from 1991 to 1996. Taking office during a severe balance-of-payments crisis, he and his finance minister Manmohan Singh dismantled the licence system, devalued the rupee and opened the economy to foreign trade and investment. His government also faced the destruction of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya in 1992 and the communal violence that followed.
