Rupee

The rupee is a currency unit of the Indian subcontinent, descended from the silver rupiya coin introduced in the sixteenth century and later standardised under Mughal rule. It remained the main unit of account in South Asia into the colonial and modern periods. Accounts of the Afsharid Empire value the treasure taken in the sack of Delhi in rupees, and accounts of the Sikh Empire record Kashmir's transfer to Gulab Singh for 7.5 million rupees under the Treaty of Amritsar.
