Paisius of Hilendar

1722–1773 · 18th century · Also known as Paisiy Hilendarski

Paisius of Hilendar was a Bulgarian monk of the Hilendar Monastery on Mount Athos and a founder of the Bulgarian National Revival. In 1762 he completed the Slavonic-Bulgarian History, which celebrated medieval Bulgarian tsars and saints and urged Bulgarians to take pride in their language and past. Copied and circulated by hand, it inspired the later national awakening.
