Pamiris

Also known as Pamiri people

The Pamiris are a group of peoples of the Pamir Mountains, living mainly in Gorno-Badakhshan in Tajikistan and in neighbouring Afghanistan, China and Pakistan. They speak several Eastern Iranian languages, such as Shughni and Wakhi, distinct from Tajik, and most follow Ismaili Islam, looking to the Aga Khan as their imam. In Tajikistan's civil war of 1992–1997 many Pamiris supported the opposition.
