Khujand
Khujand is the second city of Tajikistan, on the Syr Darya at the entrance to the Fergana Valley. One of the oldest towns of Central Asia, it is identified with Alexandria Eschate, founded by Alexander the Great in 329 BCE, and was a station on the Silk Road. Known as Leninabad from 1936 to 1991, its region supplied much of the Soviet-era Tajik ruling elite.
