Fergana Valley
The Fergana Valley is a fertile basin in Central Asia, drained by the Syr Darya and shared today by Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Chinese sources of the Han period knew it as Dayuan, famed for its horses. After the Arab conquest it became a province of the Islamic world that supplied soldiers to the Abbasid caliphs, among them the forebears of the Ikhshidid rulers of Egypt.
