Panembahan Senapati

d. 1601 · 16th century · Also known as Sutawijaya

Panembahan Senapati, born Sutawijaya, was the founder of the Mataram Sultanate in Central Java. He threw off the authority of the Pajang Sultanate in the 1580s and from around 1587 ruled independently from Kotagede, near modern Yogyakarta. He extended Mataram's power over much of Central and East Java, preparing the way for the empire of his grandson Sultan Agung.
