Panjikent

Also known as Penjikent, Pendzhikent

Panjikent is a town in north-western Tajikistan on the Zarafshan river, east of Samarkand. Beside it lie the ruins of ancient Panjikent, a Sogdian town of the 5th to 8th centuries whose excavated houses and temples have yielded extensive wall paintings of epics, gods and banquets. The poet Rudaki was born nearby, and his mausoleum stands in the district.
