Paul Gauguin

1848–1903 · 19th century

Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist painter, sculptor and printmaker. Leaving Europe in 1891, he spent most of his remaining years in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands, where he painted the works, bold in colour and simplified in form, that shaped European images of Polynesia. He died at Atuona on Hiva Oa, and his work influenced modern artists from the Fauves to Picasso.
