8th century BCE · 8th century BCE

Phalanthus was the legendary leader of the Partheniai who, according to Greek tradition, founded the Spartan colony of Taras (Tarentum) in southern Italy in 706 BCE. Ancient writers said the Delphic oracle guided him to the site, and the people of Taras honoured him as their founder-hero.
